Grade 1 Pennants Game 3

IMG_2170 (Medium).JPG

2nd April 2019

On the gorgeous Double Bay Bowling Club greens where the world disappears and you feel enveloped in a glorious jungle, the third match of the Grade 1 Pennants teams took place after two cancellations due to rain. Previously we had lost the first match and then lost second match by only one point. Today we drew! What an epic battle it was! With several die hard supporters from Clovelly to goad us on, we ignored the intermittent rain and did our best but just couldn’t outdo our worthy opponents who have dominated the Grade 1 ranks for quite a while.

Well done Double Bay! We wanted to beat you but will always love you!

2019 Major Singles Winner!

Our new club champ is Carmel Sowden who played Barbara Buhagiar in her first Singles final (without a doubt a future champion!) in an extremely tight match on Sunday 24th March in very hot conditions. The game, which included one Dead End, was a constant battle for the front and just when it looked like Barbara may have the advantage Carmel’s focus, determination and persistence earned her the win. Well done to Carmel who has scored her second Championship in 3 years and we wish her luck as she heads to the Champion of Champion competition once again! The game was expertly marked by our wonderful Sandra Starrett who did a fantastic job as always! The final score was 18-25. Congratulations to both the winner and the runner up – it was a marvelous spectacle!

Taylor Bowls – our coaching heroes!!!

In response to our growing number of new members, several of our top players trained to become certified Coaches! Training sessions are now being run at the club (for free if you are interested!) This has been fantastic and extremely enjoyable for everyone including seasoned bowlers.

The icing on the cake has been Taylor Bowls stepping up and kindly donating 5 sets of bowls in different sizes to the club for newbies to practice with! What an awfully kind thing to do! Below is an open letter from Coach Gina O’Reilly to Taylor Bowls and new members:

Coaching clinic bowls donation by Taylor’s Bowls Australia.

I would like to thank Adam Hateley from Taylor’s Bowls Direct Australia
for his generous donation of Taylor’s bowls for my coaching clinic at Clovelly Bowling Club.

Coaching new lawn bowlers and seasoned bowlers with the correct size of bowls and newer line helps students achieve confidence and enthusiasm!

Coaches can be contacted through Clovelly bowling club on Ph 9665 1507

2018 Champion of Club Champion Pairs

On Tuesday 2 October 2018, Carmel Sowden and Gina O’Reilly represented our club at Carlingford BC in the 2nd round of the CCC Pairs against Penrith City BC.
It was a very hard fought game with both teams playing brilliant shots, Clovelly went ahead in the last two ends to win 18/15.  Gina said “the score does reflect what a great game it was and a pleasure to meet and play against Lyn and Roberta from Penrith City.”

The 3rd round was played at Rosehill BC on Wednesday 3 October and Clovelly drew Engadine BC. The team played against Samantha and Natalie Noronha – both brilliant players . Carmel and Gina could not pull off another win even though they tried their best and went down 25/8.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were especially happy making the 3rd round.

Note: 1st round Clovelly drew Randwick, Randwick had to forfeit due to unforeseen circumstances. Our best wishes go out to the Madgwick family.

On Thursday 13th September, on the beautiful sunny Spring day, the Southern Suburbs District played the Eastern Suburbs District in both Open and Under 5’s in an arrogate playoff.

The Open teams went down to SSD and the Under Fives managed to overcome for a win. The lunch was delicious and company fantastic – we are all becoming great friends!

Well done to everyone who played, judged and adjudicated! We all had a wonderful time at Ramsgate’s beautiful club!

District Shield at Clovelly!

21st August 2018 The sun shone but it was cold and very windy today at Clovelly as we hosted the District Shield for 2018. The green was packed full of players as we fought the elements and ourselves on a trying day of bowls. We played 15 ends and the tally was based on ends won (then other stuff that I don’t really understand.) The winner was Waverley who came first  with an excellent effort!

It was great to see all our wonderful friends from around the district at our place! Everyone had fun catching up over a lovely lunch of delicious sandwiches and carrot cake. Congratulations to all players, officials and spectators who stuck it out – and especially to Waverley for their victory!

The Winners medals and $900 prize money was won by Joan Atkin, Peter Hughes and Maxine Stokes team and everyone had a wonderful time which concluded with a fabulous BBQ lunch and many, many amazing prizes from the grid and the raffles.

We would also like to thank our major prize sponsors: Storm in a D Cup, Bondi Golf, Lemonade Hair in Randwick and Marinello’s for their very generous prizes.
